Agent Vinod Movie Critics Review 2012

Ratings:4/5 Reviewer: Taran Adarsh
One expects AGENT VINOD to be an elegantly defined story with an exquisitely structured screenplay with some unanticipated betrayals, sensational locations, slick action but with the absence of gadgets. If that's precisely the way you are looking at AGENT VINOD unleashing before your eyes, you've got it right. Contrasting the spy movies made in Bollywood, this one's truly bona fide and swanks of a pertinent plotline. An ambitious script, set in various countries, AGENT VINOD is by far the most credible secret agent movie made in Bollywood. This hi-octane thriller has style and substance, both! On the whole, AGENT VINOD is a hi-octane espionage thriller with a heart. It is not just brawny and dynamic, but witty and crazy too. Ultra slick and stylish, this desi Bond movie adheres to the formula and succeeds in meeting the humungous expectations. AGENT VINOD has all the potential to develop into a triumphant franchise!

What’s Good: The action sequences; the stylized cinematography; the snappy editing. What’s Bad: The ordinary story; the unnecessarily confusing script; the lack of an emotional connection between the audience and the protagonist; the absence of chemistry between Saif and Kareena’s characters; the laughable climax.Verdict: Agent Vinod is a bold experiment gone wrong; certainly not something that entertains in its entirety.Watch it only if you want to see an Indian spy movie. But be warned that it comes nowhere closer to the Bond or the Bourne series of Hollywood films.

If only Agent Vinod were a video game. It has all the hallmarks of a classicSo yes, as a game it'd be sensational, and tremendous fun. As a film, on the other hand, Agent Vinod must be termed a disappointment, a slick and well-produced throwback to the spy thriller that feels both overlong and under-conceived. Agent Vinod wants to be funny, and while there is the occasional burst of wit, it's exhaustingly rare. Agent Vinod may be the best looking actioner we've seen, and Sriram Raghavan may be a unanimous choice to hold the joystick, but watching him play this particular game shows him distracted by the window dressing -- and not trying hard enough to save the princess.

Despite miraculous leaps in production values, spy thrillers in Bollywood end up looking like Chinese equivalents of western products. And here, the characters are even stereotyped to the extent of detectives wearing trench coats and moles being obvious, shifty-eyed and literally uncomfortable in their own skin. So let’s just say foreign locales, weapons to annihilate the world, designer suits and not-so-excruciating interrogations don’t cumulatively justify ‘Agent Vinod’ as a thrilling movie-watching experience.

The first 40 minutes of the film are intriguing and simultaneously confusing. It is bifurcated into sub-plots, which add adventure to the story. But, the flip side is that some sequences look completely illogical.Brilliant performances, dialogues, cinematography and innovative screenplay are the strengths. A slightly confusing direction, misleading music at some points with no relevance to the theme are the weak points. On the whole, Agent Vinod is not a flawless venture, but if you are hungry for experimental cinema, this is the movie to die for.

Agent Vinod had massive potential though. Some dialogues sparkle, and the film is slicker than most Bollywood films that claim to be stylish action thrillers.Sriram Raghavan’s Agent Vinod is brilliant in bits, and incredibly asinine in others. It’s probably the most inconsistently good film I’ve watched lately, and a massive letdown. Which is a pity. It could have made for a rare, looked-forward-to franchise.

'Agent Vinod’ starts on a promising note in Afghanistan where a Vinod is trapped by at a Lashkar hideout. He along with his team member Rajan Gandhi (Ravi Kissen) find a way out of it with bullet firing and bombings. The movie has traces of the Bond series, Raghavan’s ‘Ek Hasina Thi’, Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Dus’ and Mani Shankars’ ’16 December’. The film has a few moments that are really good and you want them to stay but the graph isn’t stable and has its ups and downs. The film also had a number of loopholes, with unexplained situations, wasted actors and so on. Plus points: Few camera angles, a few dialogues, Saif and Bebo’s chemistry and ofcourse, Ram Kapoor (you can practically watch the movie for him)
